Personally I’m a big Mark O’Connor fan on the fiddle side, and Joshua Bell on the violin side. Who’s your favorite?

I like Itzhak Perlman, and Joshua Bell too. Still trying to decide who is my all time favorite female violinist. So far I like Anne-Sophie Mutter, yeah, and Hillary Hahn too.

So many fine violinists… so few brain cells.

I would have to put qualifiers to that question.

Who is/are my favorite violin player(s) to watch as I listen to them?
    1. Itzhak Perlman and Sarah Chang (tie)

Who is/are my favorite violin player(s) for listening only?

The answer to that question can only be answered on a piece by piece basis.

I like Hilary Hahn best playing the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto, Arthur Grumiaux on Bach’s 6 Sonata’s and Partitas, Julia Fischer on Paganini’s 24 Caprices… I could go on, but… No!

So now that I’ve had time to sort it out a bit… It’s a tie between (using all qualifiers) Sarah Chang, Itzhak Perlman and Nicola Benedetti.

Why did you ask a tough question like this? I like ’em all… I don’t really have a favorite.

There are so many great classical pieces played by wonderful composers. I had trouble choosing a favorite as well!

Alasdair Fraser has got to be my all-time favorite Celtic-style fiddler. (And Natalie Haas is my favorite Celtic-style cellist… big shock, right? 😀 ) As far as Old-Time/Bluegrass/Canadian fiddling… wow, it’s hard to pick. I’ve heard a lot of really great players, since my family goes to fiddle competitions all the time. Matt Hartz and Calvin Vollrath sure are amazing.

Some of my favorite violinists are Rachael Barton-Pine, Hillary Hahn, Joshua Bell, Itzhak Pearlman… all the usual greats!

I really enjoy Hillary Hahn on the classical side of the spectrum and Natalie MacMaster on the Cape Breton fiddle side of the spectrum. Both are great at what they do. There are so many others though that I enjoy listening to.

For a Violinist I would say my favorite is David Garrett and my favorite Fiddle Player/Violinist would be Mairead Nesbitt from Celtic Woman.

My favorite? That’s a tough one to narrow down but I’d have to say Stephane Grappelli. I love the way Django Reinhardt and him “clicked” as musicians. They were impressive players but even more importantly, passionate musicians.

Vanessa Mae was my original inspiration but she seems to have disappeared off the face of the planet. When my violin practice was at an all time low, to the point I closed the case for about six months, Lindsey Stirling re-inspired me to play again and I’ve been going strong now with practice. David Davidson is a favorite Celtic fiddler of mine too!

My favourite fiddle player is Casey Driessen and I’m a huge fan of the way he uses the chopping technique. It’s much harder for me to decide on a favourite violin player but I do find myself constantly being drawn back to Janine Jansen’s performance of the Benjamin Britten violin concerto.
