I am learning many new things, but feel it will be a while before I have technique to pick a song I really like and learn it.

My first favorite song on the violin was Boil Them Cabbage Down (fiddle tune). It is lively and not too hard to play to sound like a real fiddler! Next was Ragtime Annnie.

That was a long time ago. Besides, Three Blind Mice and Twinkle. One of the first pieces that I played in 8th grade was March Militaire. We also played out of a Henry Mancini book. I liked his music. We also played music from the musical, Bye Bye Birdie, which I loved playing. I learned a little jig that we played in 7th grade that I love, and I still play it. I even played it at my mother’s funeral. I am sure she was the only that liked it besides me, but seriously, I only played it for her. She loved the violin. In 9th grade my favorite music was some music we played from The Red Poppy. The last piece of music I ever played in high school was Finlandia by Sibelius, which I loved.

Mine was Brahms waltz on Suzuki book 2. I have always love that waltz, and although this is a version for students, I loved to learn and play it.

I honestly can’t remember my first favorite song. But I can remember the one that has stuck with me the most years. When I was in grad school, my professor challenged me to learn by ear, never looking at the music, like young non-readers have to do. I was a teacher apprentice of the great John Kendall. He instructed me to memorize a piece of my playing level, so it would be fair, and he chose Bach Courante in Book 8. I memorized strictly from listening to recordings. I never forgot it.

I played by ear 5th through 9th grade in school because I didn’t have an understanding of music theory until my 12 year old started learning.

My 1st song was actually something I wrote named “A West Virginian Waltz”. I wrote it for a group that I was playing mandolin. Everyone in the group loved the song and wanted to play it, but the next week the fiddle player had to change jobs and left the group. I learned to play violin so we could still play the song. Little did I know (way back when) that it would lead to so much enjoyment, meeting so many good people and a chance what I’ve learned with others.
