Hmmmm. tough question. I am fond of the tried-and-true Arpeggione Sonata of Franz Schubert, but I eat, drink, sleep, and practice by J. S. Bach Unaccompanied Suites. C P E Bach Cm concerto takes first place for its drama and beauty, and the melodies in Mozart Sinfonie Concertante are simply divine. Actually, anything played on viola is beautiful with good intonation and that wonderful, relaxed vibrato that makes the instrument just sing….ahh….one day…..

I really like Carl Stamitz’ viola concerto in D (Op. 1), especially the Rondo theme. The piece is just too hard for me to play right now. Maybe someday!

    Here it is:

Loren, I forgot about the Stamitz. It is a great piece indeed. I just love the 2nd mvt.

That’s a REALLY hard question… Violas getting the melody is very little… We are the BEST section as we hold the orchestra together. But my FAVORITE piece has to be Concerto in G Major by Teleman!

Years ago, my favorite was “The Swan” or La Cygne” by Saint Saens.

I know it is not the speed of light & Teleman’s G Major, but it is a cool relaxing tune.

Hindemith Op 25, No 1. Shows off the capabilities of the instrument so nicely.
