Does the type of varnish really matter? I’ve read some blurbs (internet!) that said luthiers are persnickity about varnish, & my violin had sime chips

If you have a older instrument, it’s best to find a trustworthy luthier for any maintenance. The person will have a best practice for maintenenance including chips and if it’s something you should do yourself. There’s lots of workshops and summer camps for playing but I would love to see one just for care of string instruments focused on newbies, students etc.
