The gut (?) twine that held my tail piece to the back of the violin suddenly snapped.
Is there any sort of maintenance that should go into keeping this material strong/healthy ?

Awch… so now you can’t play your violin? 🙁 I don’t know what you can do to prevent it from snapping. I did however find this a useful article about the tailgut and the materials it ca be made of http://follandviolins.com/articles/tailpiece-hanger/.
Is there a luthier close to where you live who can repair this?

My teacher use copper wire to replace plastic tailgut.
