I just received my shoulder rest today and must say i am really impressed !!!. Its like those ski boots or running shoes which are monkeyed around by the retailers with foams and inserts to give you a perfect fit.
i have a long neck and a bony collar bonen area. I’ve tried a few rests, i’ve tried facecloths with elastic bands. All OK but still hard to do that ‘you know you are holding the violin properly when you can hold it up without hands’.
By re=arranging the various extra pieces in the package i was able to finally place the violin which formed to my body !. So well that i could probably fall asleep with the violin wedged under my neck. So comfortable in fact that i will never try to play Brahms Lullaby for fear of falling asleep because of the comfort of this rest. lol. This was a big gamble for me as i was paying in C$, but let me tell you .. it is worth every penny. Now it may not be for everyone. If you are comfortable with no standard rest or the facecloth trick then save your money. But if you ‘just can’t get that comfortable fit’ the Sure-Tone will do it.
Thank you Michael for offering this product to the masses.July 14, 2015 at 9:41 pm #3704
Hey Bichon, glad you liked the rest! Would you mind posting a review for me on the Suretone rest page? Thanks!July 15, 2015 at 1:53 am #3714
i don’t know. i’ve had the sneaky suspicion that ever since i got a new shoulder rest-not sure tone- that it is making me tilt my violin a funny way. i used to use various things too… then my teacher told me to get a real shoulder rest.July 15, 2015 at 11:17 am #3717
I dont about the other rest. did it come with various pieces so that you could arrange them around ?. There are enough permutations and combinations of placement which would position it properly. But as i said, if you can find a regular rest which would give you a good fit, then that , as your teacher says, is the best option.July 15, 2015 at 11:55 pm #3741
All shoulder rests fit differently and the size of your neck is a big factor in comfort of each one. The suretone is nice because it can adjust in height, while many others come in a fixed height. If you guys haven’t tried the Kun shoulder rest, that would be my second favorite.July 9, 2016 at 1:44 am #16448
I, like many others have a veritable shoulder rest museum and currently am using an acoustagrip that I hacked at with the kitchen scissors and it is doing an okay-ish job. The above review has made me decide to add to my collection, as I was already a bit intrigued. I will wait a few weeks and order one from Superior but may want to get some song books, too….July 12, 2016 at 6:16 pm #16589
What difference is there in the Kunn Shoulde Rest and the Sure Tone Rest? Toying around whether to get a new shoulder rest or not. My Kunn is 17 years old.
