Our little jam session mostly plays instrumental music where we all take a turn with our instrument, fiddle, mandolin, banjo, dobro and guitar. However some of the group would like to sing some songs too. So how do you sing and play the fiddle. Do you sing a verse while chopping in the background and then take a instrumental break, then sing another verse then another instrumental break etc or do you sing the whole song, and then do an instrumental break?? Thanks for your input as we are all new at this.

IMHO – The best thing is to get the song going with an intro, sing a verse (at least one) and chorus, then start to alternate instrumental verses with other sung verses. You can play during the singing, depending on the song but don’t play what the singer is singing. Experiment with a harmony line, or play long notes during the singing and then echo the last few words when the stop. Beware, the biggest mistake fiddlers often make is playing to loud while someone is singing. Save the real volume for your instrumental turn. I hope this helps.

Humming while playing is good for intonation.

Playing rhythm behind a singer is good.
