Does anyone else on some or most days when you practice think you are never gonna get it and that days practice makes you depressed? Did that today and seemed like I was having a hard time with everything! For one had trouble with ringing tones and I got them one time and not the next! Practice sliding from first to third position on A string and today having trouble getting D ringing tone!! I am hard on myself and want to be better but this slow pace is getting to me!

Most definitely! I need to be careful about my expectations and how I talk to myself in my head. Not treat myself worse than I would treat someone else that I care about.

I agree that the progression is sometimes mixed. There are times when I can’t repeat the song the same way twice. When this happens I just move on and come back to the piece later. I don’t keep making the same mistakes this way. It is just a bump in the road. Look how far you have come from the first lesson. Just laugh at the inaccuracy for the moment and know that you will overcome and succeed in the next session.

There are times that I can’t seem to produce a decent sound playing a given sequence or piece. What I often do at that point is to back off and play something I can play well. It gives me a bit of a boost in confidence.

Priscella you are not alone….As an adult learner I am also very hard on myself. Sometimes I don’t think I am learning fast enough but then I go back and play songs that I have already learned, I even play them better, and realize how far I have really come in three years. I spend a lot of time on scales which I still can’t play some of them melodically which is frustrating. I find that if I really relax and just don’t think so hard about playing….. songs, scales and etudes come easier.

Thanks for all the responses! Nice to know I am not alone. My violin teacher is always encouraging me by asking” now how well did you play that song last year?” I am very critical of myself- other people will say what I played sounded great when I think it was lousy! Sometimes I wonder if it really was bad and they just don’t want to hurt my feelings!I think as an adult- at my age of almost 70- I am running out of time and want to learn as much as I can. I know what I should do is relax and sit bCk and enjoy the music
