Not long ago I had a discussion with Michael about purchasing a new bow. We decided what was best and I realized that I would have to wait a while to secure the amount needed for the bow. I knew that I had an old wood bow that could be re haired while I waited for the new bow and that it would serve better than the club that I was using! Can you imagine my shock when the luthier asked if I knew what I had and then proceeded to tell me that it was a genuine G. A. Pfretzschner Bow and was worth four times what I was about to pay for a new bow?

That’s so cool! Where did you find it in the first place? Did it come with your violin when you bought it? If so, where did you purchase the violin. Hope I’m not being too nosy, just curious about how you came to be the owner of this GREAT FIND! 🙂

Truth be told Margaret, I don’t really know! I have had several violins come into my possession over the years and each one seemed to have a stick or two attached. They almost always needed re-hair and this one I took in to that end because it was straight. Prior to that I had never heard of the maker. 🙂

Did you tell me that before John? That is wonderful! I am familiar with the G. A. Pfretzschner bows, I remember we had one in a shop a while back and they were worth quite a bit of money! Congrats on the find and thanks for posting!

It was a shock to me! The only reason I took it in was that it had remained straight after some years in a storage shed out in the weather! Had no idea what it was other than straight and in need of hair! 🙂

I’ve only heard a story similar to that about 3-4 times in my career. The best story I’ve heard is someone finding a $100,000 violin in their closet attic without thinking they had anything valuable. There were on the other hand countless stories of people thinking they had a Stradivarious violin (worth millions), but every time it was always a “copy.” Congrats on a great find!
