I know it’s a lot of money. Twenty three years ago my violin was appraised at $1,000 so I probably spent more on repairs than it was worth. It was hand made in Germany and I’m sentimental about it, so it was worth it to me. There were 3 cracks in the peg box, the finger board was re-planed and re-glued, the nut and tailpiece were replaced, and the chin rest cork was evened out and seated correctly. The bow hair was re-haired and a new eyelet was installed in the frog. I forget the rest. I heard that hand made violins cost around $25,000 so I feel justified in spending so much. Besides, it plays like a dream and I’m practicing more. Should I have bought another violin rather than repair an old one?
