I have both acoustic and a cheap electric violin. My problem is that even the electric violin is quite loud, even with a mute and un-amplified. Has anyone found a way to practice the violin quietly?

It does, but I am talking about the acoustic sounds, which are still quite loud!

Do you want to quiet your sound for other people around you or for yourself? I think it’s important to let the violin (acoustic) go full volume so you can develop tone.

If I was ever asked to play quieter my answer would be a short… No! I like the full sound I am able to produce. Luckily, my son, grandson, nor my neighbors complain. I don’t think my kitties mind either… they stick around in my room.

How big of a difference is there in the sound when using a mute compared to not using one? Also, does using a mute quiet it so much that you have difficulty hearing mistakes?

Daniel, there’s a few different kinds of mute you can use. The ones with the strongest muting effect are the metal ones that fit over the bridge. I use the Glaesel ultra practice mute, it fits over the bridge but it’s plastic and has a pretty good mute effect. I can hear my mistakes plenty haha.

Also, for Deacon, it really doesn’t get any quieter than a solid body electric violin. Are you sure the volume isn’t just kinda in your head? Sometimes I think I’m too loud, but I’ve asked and the folks around me can’t hear too much when I’m in a closed room with the mute on.
