I recently started looking at an Old-time fiddle book and it’s mostly in cross A, or cross G tuning. I was wondering if people keep a fiddle for different tunings or just change theirs when necessary?

I only have one fiddle so I have to change mine when I need. I would love to have a second fiddle just so I could have one in standard tuning all of the time and the other for cross tunings. I haven’t done much playing because of the hassle of tuning the only fiddle to the new tuning and then back again.

Why would a fiddle need to be tuned differently?

How do you know when to cross-tune? If that’s the correct phrase.
