My earliest memory of hearing the violin is when I went to my grandparents place. Every now and then my grandparents would have kitchen parties. There were lots of friends and family there and lots of music. There were guitars, accordians, spoons, singing and of course, violins.

Now, both of my grandfathers played fiddle but one of them was especially exceptional. Sometimes it would take a bit of convincing to get him to play but once it happened, all of the other instruments and singing stopped and everyone just watched him play.

That’s my first memory of hearing the violin. What’s yours?

This may sound funny, but I can remember Jack Benny playing the violin intentionally badly on his TV show. I was told later by professionals in the field that he was actually a pretty good violinist and just played badly as part of a comedy act. Other than that, I did hear violins being played in ensemble in our symphony orchestra.
