How do others deal with perfectionism and unrealistic expectations? It can be very discouraging to produce a good sound but have it so far from what I aim to achieve. I’m trying to focus on small goals and progress, “progress not perfection.” Also, I’m thinking fiddle music seems more fun and forgiving than classical. The exercises and drills seem to help, too. I’m forcing myself to take a break when I tense up physically or mentally. I also deal with this when playing piano, which is what helped me recognize it and have hope to be able to enjoy playing violin again. Spending some time fiddling for fun and not just focusing on playing increasingly more difficult pieces is another tactic I’m using, letting the goal be fun and enjoying practice time, not just improvement. I’d love to hear others’ ideas and experiences.
