When playing should the bow hair be flat against the string? Should I be using the edge of the bow hair? Does it matter? Just got my violin a few days ago and I am still trying to figure it all out

Great question, Danny! And welcome to the Forum! Yes, you should keep the horsehair flat on the string. This will help you get a solid tone from the violin. Later on, when trying to play softer, you might tip the hair to the side a bit to achieve a softer sound. Have fun with your new violin! If you’re interested, I’d like to invite you to join in my Beginning Violin Group class starting next week. I’ll be teaching the course from the ground up so it would be perfect for you as a beginner. We’re going to have lots of fun! I’d love to meet you in one of my free intro classes later this week. You can sign up from the Group Classes section of the website.

Thank you so much for the response, that answers a lot of questions I had because I would watch videos of people play and see them using both the edge and having the bow hair flat against the strings. I will definitely be in your free group class Thursday and take your beginner level class next week. I have some serious issues with keeping my right hand on the bow correctly..lol…I am just a mess but I am loving every second of it…:).

    Thanks again

I went to sign up for your beginners class but noticed it starts at 4pm and I do not get home from work that early. Do you know if you may be teaching another beginners class in the near future that might start later in the evening?
