With folk music, I tend to ‘pick up’ a piece by ear anyway as it isn’t always readily available as sheet music, but often available in recorded form. Also, I find that no matter how much I practice something off the paper, learning it by listening to someone else play it, and taking it off the paper, is the best way to put my own stamp and ‘feel’ to it! That said, when I play with the band I am the only fiddler, so I have more freedom to experiment and improvise. I can’t speak from a classical musician’s point of view as most of what i play is folk! 🙂
