When I was in college, I got the opportunity to play the Tchaikovsky Rococo Variations with the student orchestra. It starts with a pretty long orchestra introduction, ending in a long horn line that leads to the solo cello entrance.

I remember sitting there, listening to the opening, hearing the horn line, thinking it sounded lovely… then silence. I was waiting on the conductor, the conductor was waiting on… me! Oh no, I’m supposed to be playing!

I’m sure in reality it wasn’t that long a pause, but it felt like an ETERNITY!
