My name is Ben Chan and I bumped into Michael Sanchez about a month or so ago as our musical worlds crossed via the internet. I started playing violin at 5 years old and have been playing ever since. I did my bachelor’s degree in Violin Performance but decided not to pursue it as a career in favor of my parallel passion and skill set in web development. I’m now a full-time web developer with several clients and struggle to limit myself to 40 hours a week, plus I teach 3 students ages 12, 14 and 16.
I have a YouTube channel “BenChanViolin” that has stagnated lately due to a busy schedule with my wife and 3 daughters ages 4, 2, and 3 months, but it has at least grown to slightly over 50,000 subscribers and 11 million views.
I’m also collaborating on a program called InstruNote (www.instrunote.com) which gives kids and adults of all ages and skill levels basic ear training, rhythm, and eventually sight-reading abilities through a permanent memory process called spaced rehearsal.
I love music and am excited for my 4-year-old daughter to begin taking piano lessons this summer. Eventually she’ll start violin but she showed interest in the piano first, so that’s what we’ve decided to start with. And I’ll be paying a local Suzuki teacher to teach her violin rather than teaching her myself – I think it’s better this way for a number of reasons.
Glad to be part of the community!
