I restarted after 48 years of not playing. I also regret having quit, but I’m grateful to have my music back and to have learned piano over the last 5 years. The piano journey has helped me understand the issues that caused me to quit, grieve, and establish boundaries that can protect me. It also has helped me see my part in contributing to some of the problems that were part of why I quit. Piano has also helped me understand some music theory better, so in that way I’ve been studying music that helps my violin playing, too. Now I can choose my goals and music that I like, choose to not be caught up in competitive dynamics, and play for my own enjoyment. If others also enjoy it that could be a bonus but not my primary focus. I can celebrate progress and not see every imperfection as failure. I can be patient and gentle with myself without giving up.
