Great question, Danny! And welcome to the Forum! Yes, you should keep the horsehair flat on the string. This will help you get a solid tone from the violin. Later on, when trying to play softer, you might tip the hair to the side a bit to achieve a softer sound. Have fun with your new violin! If you’re interested, I’d like to invite you to join in my Beginning Violin Group class starting next week. I’ll be teaching the course from the ground up so it would be perfect for you as a beginner. We’re going to have lots of fun! I’d love to meet you in one of my free intro classes later this week. You can sign up from the Group Classes section of the website.
