Hi Diane – Trying out new strings is exciting, and one of my favorite things! Do you have one of Michael’s instruments from Superior Violins, or one of your own previously? I’d be interested to hear about your experiences with the Evah Pirazzi strings. Also, I’ve not tried out Zyex before. How did you like them?

In regards to the extra E-string you ordered, I’ve kept notes about strings I’ve used. Here are the notes I made for myself on the non-whistling Kaplan string:
“D’Addario Kaplan Wound E (medium gauge): Soft under the fingers. A bit less ringing than plain wire E strings, but doesn’t whistle at all. There’s an odd mixture of sweet and gritty sound in this string. I believe the grit comes from the extra friction from the string’s winding and is mostly heard right under the ear instead of carrying to listeners. I really want to like it, but it’s an odd string on this instrument.”
Everyone I’ve spoken with seems to enjoy the power of the Evahs. The Kaplan is definitely in the softer spectrum quality, but you may find it to warm up the set and round it out. I’d love to hear your thoughts as well!

By the way, my experience with this E-string is on my 5-string Damiano, which has a different array of overtones than most violins.
