I’ve been sort of playing around with the violin for almost 5 years. I’m in my early 50’s and feel really new, even though I’ve been tinkering that long. I think it’s because I’m getting more serious about it. For example, I’m not practiced on scales and hardly know any. I just heard the word, Etude, for the first time last week, and I’m still working out those little black squiggles on the straight lines…what do you call them? Oh yeah, notes. So as you can see, I feel like I’m starting from scratch.

What can I do on the violin? Chase the dog out of the room. Why do I do it? I don’t like the dog–just kidding. The violin is totally cool. And I guess I’m willing to go through a little torture to try and tap into that coolness.
