I agree with the comment that it’s difficult to improv when you’ve played a classical style for so long. I only learned and played classical all through school. Later I learned that as a little girl, my mother would often listen to her uncles fiddlin’ at family reunions and the like. She asked if I could play around with songs like that, so I tried and I just couldn’t! I felt all stiff and fake, like a trained ballerina trying to demonstrate swing. It definitely takes a lot of practice and an entire mind shift to ‘play around’ with your instrument instead of ‘perform’ with it.
